Prosthetic Devices

*This page is intended to provide a basic understanding of prostheses - all decisions about types of prostheses should be discussed with prosthetists and doctors before final decisions are made

Prosthetist – professional who designs, fabricates, and fits the prosthesis (includes a socket and all associated components)

  • Prosthesis – an artificial body part that substitutes or supplements a missing part of the body

    • Socket – a portion of the prosthesis that surrounds the residual limb

    • Liner – a material placed directly over the skin, a barrier between the socket and the residual limb

    • Sock – a material of varying ply to adjust the fit of the socket during times of volume changes

    • Prosthetic Technology – refers to the componentry that makes up the prosthesis

    • Suspension – how the prosthesis attaches to the body

    • Terminal Device – componentry on the distal aspect (furthest from the trunk/body) – passive, moveable, articulated, maybe activity specific
